The $1,000 Emergency Fund Is Just a Start

If you have ever read anything by Dave Ramsey (of Financial Peace University and the Total Money Makeover), then you may be familiar with his Seven Baby Steps to Financial Peace.

The first step is to establish a $1,000 emergency fund.   The idea behind this step is that if you have $1,000 saved in the bank, you won’t turn to credit cards whenever an emergency crops up.

Once you’ve saved that $1,000, step two is to pay off all of your debts.

Unfortunately, it’s all too easy to stop with the steps when you get your debt paid off.  After working so hard to pay off your debt, it’s perfectly normal to feel like a puppy who just discovered an open gate.  Without your debt looming over you, there is a lot of temptation that can lead to lifestyle creep.

That $1,000 emergency fund is just the first step.  It’s the catalyst to a lifelong change in attitude toward how you save and how you spend.

If you’re committed to being debt-free (and staying debt-free),  then you need to carry on with the Baby Steps.  You need to build that emergency fund, start saving for retirement, help fund the kids education, pay off the mortgage, and then build wealth and give.

My husband and I have been debt-free except for the house since 2006.  We built a house, added twins to our family, and I became a stay at home mom.  It hasn’t been easy for us to stay out of debt and focus on the remaining steps.  Here are some ways we’ve stayed motivated:

Stay on the Same Page

My husband and regularly discuss our finances.  We work on our budget together.    When you and your partner can agree on what you want to accomplish, you’ll have much more success.

Prioritize Projects  &  Designate “Wants” vs. “Needs.”

There is constant temptation everywhere.  And while it’s okay to blow a little bit of money every now and then, delayed gratification in honor of the greater goals can be a wonderful thing.

Remember Where We Were

One thing that surprised me, when we had paid off our more than $60,000 in debt, was how easy it was to forget what a struggle it was to pay it off.  Sometimes, I take myself on a little trip down memory lane. Looking at our credit reports and our sad bank account statements from those years of living in debt can help me recognize just how far we’ve come.  And it serves as a good reminder of why I never want to live that way again.

Focus on the Future

My husband and I dedicate a couple of date nights a year to setting goals (both financial and others) for our family. We lay out the kind of family life we want, and spell out how to pay for it.  When you’re on the same page, these little goal-setting sessions really get you pumped about staying debt-free.

Never Stop Learning

We are always trying to learn new skills, develop ones we have, and connect with others who share our interests.  There’s certainly no one right or wrong way to manage your money, so why not hear what others have to say on the topic.

Just because you’ve paid off debt and have more money to spend, doesn’t mean that you should just blow that money.  Instead, remind yourself that the journey to financial security is a marathon and not a sprint.  Setting up that little emergency fund and paying off the debt doesn’t even take you halfway to the finish line.  Those first two steps are merely the training that bring you to success.  Stay focused.

How do you stay motivated on your journey to financial freedom?

I like the blue as I would love to find tranquility and patience is something I truly lack. My favorite tying is the mixed twist. Otherwise, the basic.

    • Joni G

I love this idea. I have always liked symbol jewelry and this is really special. I like the symbol for grateful. I need to be reminded to be thankful every day for what God has given me. I also wear a bracelet that says “live with grace”. I like the simplicity of the basic tie.

  • Danielle

Patience please – I love these rings!

  • http://poxyd.com Amanda

I love the look of the basic tie, it’s so clean and simple. I would wear it with the “Remember to be Kind” colored string, because I think all good things stem from a willingness and devotion to be kind to the world.

  • mary b

I would like to remember to have patience.
The tie with beads looks like a fun way to customize the ring!

  • Katlyngibson

I would love the patience ring. With a child with special needs and one without I forget a lot of the time to have patience with each of them in a separate way. I also like the basic tying style.

  • Jeannette

Would like the black for remembering to enjoy. I work full time outside of the home, full time mom to one special needs child and one typically developing child, and trying to start a photography business. Sometimes I forget to just take a deep breath and….enjoy. :)

Sweet idea, I like the mixed twist. It would be fun to pass on as a gift or use a new reminder each week!

  • Maribellp

I like the blue to remember to be patient. The basic tie is my fav.
    Thanks

  • Barbara

I like the yellow! I think everyone needs to be reminded to feel gratitude. I’m a simple gal and like the basic tie. Thank you!

  • Sharon

I like the gold basic tie….I am one of those that the economy has really hit hard right now….so I want to be reminded that, though I may not have money to give, I still have a smile, a kind word, a clap on the back, etc. to give to someone that could just make their day.

My favorite is the twist and for the two colors I know I need are blue for patience and silver for forgiveness. Any reminder that I need those two qualities would be a cherished reminder.

  • http://profiles.google.com/lighthouse136 Cheryl R

I would like black. Sometimes I forget to enjoy the little things.

  • Jen

I love the the love and remember to enjoy rings. 3 of my 4 kiddos are girls and love to share jewelry. We have pieces with special meaning that we sometimes stick on another’s nightstand so when they go to bed or wake up in the am they know we have been thinking of them-and they remember the sentiment when they wear it all day. These are an amazing way to do that. Love these.

  • sam

I would say the blue for patience….sometimes I have none! Very cute rings & cute idea – I like them!

  • http://www.facebook.com/Kat2U.71 Kat Wood

Thanks for the really nice give-away. :)

I’m going to be honest and say I need every one of those strings. A deep spiral into depression over the last few years has led me to build a wall around myself, turn inward, and just generally be unable to focus on anything besides misery.

I’m trying to get better, though. It’s a long, hard road out, with more steps back than forwards lots of times, but I have faith that with God’s help, and with determination, that I’ll get there, and that by this time next year, I’ll be a “new” person. :)

White and the bow.. need to be more loving to myself.

  • Melissabearm03

I like the white string-peace,life, tranquility and I like the bow style.

  • http://lunchnotes.wordpress.com/ kathie

I love the idea of remembering to Give (gold) and to be Optimistic (yellow).

  • Juanita

I would choose the gratitude ring (yellow), because over the past few years I have incorporated gratitude in my journaling and in other aspects of my life, with great things coming from it. When I looked at the tying method, my first thought was that my daughter would love the duo or the mixed twist style so as to represent two virtues. The rings are fascinating!

  • http://www.athankfullheart.blogspot.com Miranda

I want to remember to be patient and I like the bow style the best.

  • Lucy

I like the bow tying style or the mixed. I like the white because simplifying and practicing silence is something I’m working on.

  • http://profiles.google.com/bobbeym Bobbey Martinez

I’d pick the blue patience string; patience is one of the things that I desperately need to remind myself of daily. My favorite tie is beads so I could have white and yellow beads to remind myself to take time for myself and be grateful for my blessings.

  • Karen C

I had never seen these rings before and I love the concept! What a great idea. I like the duo tying technique, and I would use the colors blue and yellow. Blue because as a teacher of 13-14 year olds, this time of year the kids are ready to be outside and are “done” with middle school. Yellow, because with the economy the way it is we all need to be grateful for what we have – including a job, even when my patience is being challenged. :-)

  • srombauer

I like the blue and would probably mixed twist it with white. I need patience and a remember to listen.

  • srombauer

I like the blue and would probably mixed twist it with white. I need patience and a remember to listen.

  • Mjohnson

I need them all! Well, I would go with black for enjoying life or pink for love. The style would like is mixed. Thanks!

  • http://thediscombobulatedmommy.blogspot.com/ The Discombobulated Mommy

What a neat idea! I like the reminder to enjoy. Sometimes I’m so caught up with what needs to be done that I have to remember to relish the moments I have now with my kids because they are growing up so quickly. I would do the duo style and pair it with remember to be patient…especially as I’m trying to potty-train my 2 year old ;)

  • Jamie

I like the blue: I am working on patience, and learning to respond instead of react.

  • B

What a beautiful concept! I would have to go with Silver /White- Remember to forgive / Remember to be kind to yourself. As a survivor of sexual assault, I take each day one at a time reminding myself not to blame myself for being in the wrong place at the wrong time and not to be hard on myself just because I jump at every touch or sound. I need to treat myself as I would others who have had similar or worse experiences. As a result, I would probably do “The duo” tye. Thanks for this opportunity to win! :o )

  • Fee

I would choose the mixed twist, and I would choose the colour purple, mixed with silver. I live overseas, don’t really speak the language spoken here in this desert land, sometimes face tough issues and am always telling myself that I should be more tolerant and forgiving of others……

  • Jackie

I love the black and white mixed twist…remember to enjoy and be kind to yourself. Just what I need. The simplicity but thoughtfulness of these rings are wonderful.

  • http://profiles.google.com/victoria.crowell Victoria Wheeler

I really like the orange. As my favorite color, I also love what it stands for – especially in times when I have difficult with motivation. I have to admit, I’d just keep it simple, with the basic ring. I think it looks gorgeous that way.

  • Krystie Griffin

basic orange. i love this idea.

  • Stephanie

Thank you for sharing this giveaway. I like the silver string forgiveness ring in the basic style. Very pretty. Thank you again have a blessed day.

  • Mary J

I like the Remember to be Kind to Yourself (white). The duo style is what I like.

  • Mercedes

I would wear the string ring with white and blue in the duo style… the white to remind myself that I need to be kind to myself…I may have a newborn and a five year old to take care of but I need to take care of myself also! Blue because I need to remember to have patience with my five year old when she acts out because she feels she needs more attention…

  • Whitney Baugh

I like the blue, because patience is something I need to work on. I like the bow.

  • DeeRiv

I really like the white…be kind to yourself. Maybe seeing the ring would be a reminder to not engage in negative self talk. I like the look and idea behind these rings…very cool.

  • Lizzy G

I would want to be reminded to kindest to those that are closest to me – my husband and 4 children! I like the basic! :)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_O75TYHOQ7OWKXBH7HYPI7C3PNY Local Yahoo User

would like to see more pics of the ring ON fingers. I like the black

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1275861925 KateandBill Blevins

My reminder should be the peace, life & simplicity one. I need to “Remember to be Kind to Yourself
Slow down, take a deep breath, and relax tense muscles. Take time for yourself everyday to just be in silence.” I love the mixed twist or the bow tying style. What a wonderfully fun ring!

  • Emily

I love the basic ring and I would want to wear the silver to remember forgiveness right now. Our bible study just had a week focusing on forgiveness. It is something I have struggled with time and again in my past. This ring would be a great reminder of how far I have come with God strengthening me more everyday.

  • Karina House

I like the blue because I need a visual reminder to be patient! I think the duo is a nice way to tie it – so I guess I’d also pick pink for kindness.

  • ElizabethJ

The Duo, yellow and orange. Yellow to remind me to always be grateful for the wonderful people and things I have in my life and for all the many many things I could write down that I’m grateful for. And orange to remember to laugh and lighten up. I gave a tendency to get very serious and life would be so much more fun with more laughter. I know my husband and 3&5 yr old boys would agree! I LOVE THESE RINGS!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Judy-Neus-Magee/100001838186426 Judy Neus Magee

Blue in the mixed twist..patience is a virtue I am continually working on.

  • Sandirap

I like the blue tranquility for patience…and the bow tied. I have a little guy who is 6, he is a very lively and energetic child who needs a lot of attention. He is very loving and good hearted and I wouldn’t change him for anything. It is myself who needs a reminder of that once in a while…and lots of patience. My favorite quote is “Be happy for this moment…for this moment is your life”. I wear a bracelet with this quote on it that a friend hand stamped in sterling silver for my a few years ago. This ring would make a nice compliment to it. I think I will buy one if I don’t win it. Thanks for the link!

  • Sarah M.

I’m a basic kind of girl and, with a toddler, I choose wear blue to remind myself to have patience.

  • Catherine

These are beautiful! I would choose blue for tranquility and white for being kind to yourself and wear them in a mixed twist. Thanks!

  • Lindsey

I like silver… forgive… it’s always good to remember that our Heavenly Father forgives us every time we ask. We should be that gracious to each other.

  • MomOfFour

I really like the thankfulness ring. We have so much to be thankful for.

  • http://www.facebook.com/cari.mancari.shepard Cari Shepard

Those are really neat. I don’t normally wear silver but that ring is one I would consider wearing.

  • NW Homesteader

I like the silver as a good reminder that no one, especially me, is perfect.

  • Kara

I like the mixed twist. I’d twist blue and orange. I could really use some patience :)

  • Elizabeth

Red or yellow would due me well. I need to be more optimistic and kind. Don’t know which one I need more. The mixed twist would be perfect for this but I think I prefer the bow.

  • Lindsay

I like the basic the basic tying style, and like to remember to be patient.

  • Witchhavn

I love the whole idea of the string ring and could see how I’d use different colors at different times but the one I would use the most is the blue because I am definitely patience-deficient. My choice for the method of tying is the traditional without the knot, bow, or beads showing because I’m a traditional kind of girl!

  • http://www.morethanmundane.com Krissa

I like the blue for patience and the basic tie! I’ve never seen these before…how fun!

  • Candice

I would have to choose the white or the black. I always need to be proactive in being kind to myself, I’m the last person I think of. The black for the same reasons – I should try harder to stop for a moment & enjoy all the wonderful things around me & people in my life.
As for design, I think the duo would be perfect! I could have a beautiful reminder of two very important things!
    Thanks for the contest!

I’d love a black string one to remember to enjoy.

  • Trish

I like the “remember to love” – everyone needs a little love in this world. And I like the basic knot. What a great idea!

  • Amanda Gray

Gold—to remember that my children need me more than anything, and that they deserve all the attention that I can give them.
I like the mixed twist, the duo, and the basic.

  • Lisa R.

I would like to wear the black for remembering to enjoy, w/ basic style tie. I’m a SAHM of 4 littles, and sometimes forget to live in the moment. I need to find joy in the every day, because I know these days fly by.

  • http://profiles.google.com/everymomentofeveryday Kelly Stevens

I am tossed between the Empathy, love, or wisdom and understanding strings so I think I would love the use the mixed twist tying method so as to focus on more then one act of kindness :o )

  • Linda

I like the white and black in the mixed twist style

  • sarah r.

my favorite…. “remember to love” – I love the basic knot. we all need love & patience & random hellos. what a good idea. :)

  • Pjames330

    I like yellow -optimism
    And I like the bow
    pjames330 at aol dot com

  • Cassie

I want to remember to be patient. I would want the basic.

  • Savesum

The yellow string – remebering to be grateful. For me, being grateful would be a starting point for many of the other reminders I need on a daily basis. I really like “The Beads” option for tying.

  • DesertMom

These are great! I love the mixed twist to remember to be patient and enjoy this time with my young ones.

I love this idea! Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention :) My almost 12 year old niece will be getting one for her birthday next month. For myself I love the Orange for Laughter, I really believe that laughter is food for the soul, and Yellow for Gratitude, it’s so important to focus on what we have rather than what we don’t. I like the Duo……. but imagine that I would switch out frequently. Thanks again! ♥ THIS!!

  • Tracy

I like the black, remember to enjoy, with the basic tie style. Simple:)

  • http://www.facebook.com/hhnbs.chrissy Chrissy Grainger

I love the blue string and am needing to be reminded to be patient often. The mixed twist tying style is unique and pretty.

  • Rae278

Yellow for optimism… I have such a hard time with this and it would be the one thing I need to be reminded of most.

Even if I don’t win, I think I have to get this. Beautiful!

  • Maeplus

This is lovely. I like the basic and the duo, and I’m drawn to several colors, including patience and gratitude.

  • 4bakers

I really love this way to remind us to be kind! My favorite would be the yellow for optimism – a great reminder to be grateful!

  • Annehfehr

I think that love encompasses all ther others. Such a great way to remember! :)

  • http://impressyourkids.org lmilla

Oh, I need patience and gratefulness!!! And I could put them together and tie them in a duo!!!

  • Michelle

I like the mixed-twist with the orange for laughter and blue for patience. Cause sometimes I feel mixed up and twisted with 4 kids ages 4-8 I don’t often have the patience that I should have and laughter is hard to come by sometimes.

  • Lynley King

I really need the patient and enjoy as a double twist. With young children a bit more patience wouldn’t go astray as well as to remember what life is all about, enjoyment :-)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1403394303 Maggie Mahoney

Love these. I would get the purple string, basic tie and wear it as a thumb ring…. to remember to be more tolerant of people and remember we all walk a different path.

  • Andrea

I like the basic bow and want to learn to be more patient!

  • Ice_mom

I like the patience and tolerance as a reminder at home and at work (daycare teacher). I also like the mixed twist.

  • http://profiles.google.com/covenantmama Dawn Larimer

The duo style with Silver for forgiveness and Red for kindness because I need to be reminded of these daily…

  • Rluck

I like this idea! A nice, simple and pretty piece of jewelry. I like the mixed twist, and would likely use the blue & white – for patience, peace & simplicity. I’d swap in the gold, too, to remember to give, even though it’s hard in this economy. These reminders are beautiful & really important!

  • Susannah

I like the Basic. What a great idea, wearing an outward symbol as a reminder! I think it would help me to remember to offer praise, encouragement and grace to others, especially family members–to “only speak words that make souls stronger.”

  • Cmhoudini

This is a fabulous idea. Right now I write on my left thumb (the fleshy part) something I need to work on each week. Everyone always asks what I need to remember. The bow ring with the love and forgiving strings (red and silver) would be best for me. It would help me remember that by showing love and forgiving I will develop greater patience, gratitude and charity for others. This is delightful! Thank you for the chance to win! I think my daughters will need one too, if I am wearing it. Have a great week. cmhoudini@gmail.com

  • Tara

I love pink so much, but I would for sure love the red because it is just another way that I can be reminded every day of the ULTIMATE act of selfless kindness of Jesus Christ! I have a reminder band that says “Put God First” that my husband created. God bless you for this wonderful idea!!!

  • http://twitter.com/jen_w_a jenwa

I had never seen these before–what a wonderful idea! I like the basic knot and the blue, silver and white colors are perfect for any woman, wife, mom, etc. :)

  • Melanie

Black – Remember to Enjoy. Everyday “stuff” gets in the way of truly stopping and enjoying every little moment with my husband and two sons!

  • http://profiles.google.com/kimbermonaghan Kimberly Monaghan

I love the blue and black in the duo tie.

  • Anonymous

I would love the patience colored string ring with the beaded knot. Though it would likely be just as beautiful doing a duo string with the beaded knot.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1420771757 Amy Cantwell Carter

I would wear the gold string in the basic tie–”Remember to Give”. I have a friend who w/ her husband and 6 children are returning this week from being in the mission field since Sept. They gave up EVERYTHING to do this, and I want to bless them while they are back home between assignments!

  • Jennifer

Definitely the patience string with basic knot.

  • Kirameku

This is such a wonderful idea ! The jewelry is super original and has meaning behind it, that makes it twice as cool ! :D The design is fresh and will stay up to date for a long time. Lovely ! :D

The ones I like the most are the black and the green, as we forget too often to take care of what little time we have left and the beautiful home we have. I think it`s very important that we take time to enjoy every moment, and by that we`ll be able to guide and help out people even better. And I can nver insist enough on the importance of nature.

The tying styles I like the most are the mixed twist and the bow.

  • http://www.momdropbox.com Audrey

I get motivated by focusing on the future.  We never know what’s headed our way, but regardless, life will be easier with less debt and a savings cushion.  The $1k mini-EF touted by DR gives me heartburn, honestly.  I’ve read his books and get where he’s coming from, but personally, that amount feels too small for a family.

  • Misty

I agree, the $1000.00 emergency fund is too small.  That could be taken out with one thing.  When my husband and I first got married we got on a five year plan to pay off all debt and build up our savings before I started staying at home with our future kids (our girls are now 6 & 2) and it was hard work, but with focus and like Christina said, focusing on your wants vs. your needs it is totally possible. Not only did we pay off over 50,000 dollars in debt, we saved up 20% for our home down payment when my husband got transferred.  I now stay at home and work part time from home and we are doing better than we did with two full time incomes.  It is all about prioritizing, hard work and being content with what you have at the time so if you NEED something in the future you will have the means to get it.  :)
